Using UHINt on a Mac

Follow

UHIN provides the UHINt software as part of every clearinghouse membership. UHINt is an installed program that is compatible with Windows operating systems. If you would like to run UHINt on a Mac, you will need a Windows environment. Having a Windows environment on your Mac means that there is a section of your Mac that looks and acts like a Windows computer.

The most popular options for installing a Windows environment are listed below. Please note that all of these options require an installation disc or installation code for a Windows Operating System (OS), such as Windows 8 or 10. A Windows OS can cost up to $200, depending on which operating system you get and where you make the purchase. You can find options by doing an internet search for the phrase “buy windows OS.”

  • Boot Camp: This software is free and is included as a standard option in Macs. Switching between Mac and Windows modes with this software requires restarting your computer and selecting the mode you want upon startup. For more information, check out the official support page: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/boot-camp
  • Parallels: This software is a purchased product that typically costs around $80. Switching between Mac and Windows modes with this software is simply a matter of clicking on a Parallels icon on the screen. You will not need to shut down your computer to switch back and forth. For more information, visit the Parallels page: https://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/buy/?pd&new
  • VMWare Fusion: This software is a purchased product that typically costs around $80. Like Parallels, switching between Mac and Windows modes with this software does not require shutting down your computer.  For more information, visit the VMWare Fusion page: https://www.vmware.com/products/fusion.html
  • VirtualBox: This software is free, and allows switching between Mac and Windows modes without shutting down the computer. Due to the technical nature of this program and the lack of a dedicated support team, we would recommend that anyone attempting to use this software have in-house technical support. For more information or to download the software, go to: https://www.virtualbox.org/

Once you have installed your chosen software, you can load your purchased Windows OS onto your computer. When this is complete and you have a functioning Windows environment on your computer, the UHINt software can then be installed and run from the new environment.

If you have any questions, contact UHIN at 877-693-3071 to discuss your software options.
